Samurai recovering from battle wounds would visit Shibu Onsen over 700 years ago. Today, the village is a relaxed getaway. 9 free public hot springs, various temples, izakaya (pubs), onsen eggs and foot baths make Shibu Onsen a quintessentially Japanese experience. Take it slow by staying the night, soaking in your hotel’s onsen, and trying traditional kaiseki food, or stroll through on your way to/from Jigokudani or Shiga Kogen. Either way, you’re sure to enjoy the experience. It’s just a 5-minute bus ride or a 45-minute walk to/from Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park and a 5-minute taxi ride or 15-minute walk to/from Yudanaka Station.
Yudanaka’s history is even longer, dating back 1300 years. The famous poet Issa Kobayashi frequented here, writing about its beauty in his poetry. Various ryokans/hotels service guests in this area, offering a variety of pricing and accommodation options. Yudanaka Onsen is located conveniently at the end of the Nagano Dentatsu Line and most hotels/ryokans have a free shuttle to the Snow Monkeys. You can also catch a bus leaving hourly from Yudanaka Station to Jigokudani or Shiga Kogen, as well as a taxi. See the Access page for more information on getting around.
